STEM Scholars engage in continuous, substantive research at the Summer Scholars Institute and their universities.
The general research areas for the Summer Scholars Institute participants included:

- Organic synthesis of mimic molecules and combinatorial chemistry
- Effects of ceftriaxone on neurons
- Viral studies
- Chemistry and organic synthesis dimmer formation for HIV inhibitor peptide
- Informatics research using mash-ups for information maps
- Breast cancer and TGF beta signaling
